Kiwi Mango Salsa

When I think of late night snack, I think of the kiwi. I know… what? Who thinks that? Well, me, ever since I found out about how helpful the gorgeous little gem of a kiwi is for sleep aid. Specifically sleep quality and sleep duration. But I’ll get to that more in a little. On a food front…

The kiwi brings brightness. Not just flavor, but that sparkling kind of acidity that feels both sweet and tart and brightens everything up. On its own, it can be a little intense, which is where the mango steps in and softens the edges. It rounds everything out, adds a gentle sweetness, and gives the salsa a little more body and dessert-y-ness so it actually feels like something you can scoop and enjoy as a fresh sweet treat.

But don’t forget the added cucumber, which might be the quiet heroes of quiet heroes. It adds crunch, yes, but more importantly it adds water content that feels clean and refreshing instead of overwhelming. Combined with the lime and cilantro, the whole thing lands somewhere between a salsa and a hydration filled dish.

But as I was speaking to, that’s not all this dish does! This salsa leans into foods that can actually support better sleep.

Kiwis in particular have been studied for their role in sleep quality. They naturally contain serotonin, which plays a role in regulating sleep cycles, along with antioxidants that may help reduce inflammation and support overall restfulness. Some research has even suggested that eating kiwis before bed may help you fall asleep faster AND stay asleep longer. Mango contributes its own quiet support. It contains vitamin B6, which is involved in serotonin production, and its natural sugars can help make tryptophan more available to the brain. That’s part of the reason why a slightly sweet, whole-food snack in the evening can sometimes feel more satisfying and calming than something overly processed.

Even the supporting ingredients pull their weight. Cucumber is deeply hydrating, which matters more than we often think when it comes to sleep quality. Mild dehydration can subtly disrupt rest, and foods with high water content can help offset that. Lime and cilantro bring antioxidants and freshness, keeping everything feeling light rather than heavy. No overly full bellies trying to go to sleep here!

So while this started as a simple dessert style salsa, it became that and more. A salsa that works as a midday snack, yes, but also something you could come back to in the evening when you want a little something that feels good, tastes bright, and doesn’t weigh you down.

It pairs nicely with chips or graham crackers, for spooning over whatever’s already on your plate or tacos, or honestly just eating straight out of the fridge. Simple, yet functional food. A win is a win! If you make this, don’t forget to tag me (@herbyeater), I’d love to know what you think!
