Lentil Harissa Tomato Soup

Lentils, tomato sauce, and a spoonful of harissa come together into a thick, smooth base that tastes like it’s been simmering for hours… even if it hasn’t. It’s a recipe that I am especially proud of, as a low key tomato soup hater for years. You read that correct! I am not a fan of the dairy laden tomato soup that I have seen riddled on chain restaurant menus for years as one of the only vegetarian options; maybe its this that has led to my disdain, or the fact it just never makes me feel good after eating, but classic tomato soup has got to go. This version is much better, and really rewrites the history surrounding tomato soup in my life.

The lentils cook down into a naturally creamy texture that doesn’t need dairy or coconut milk. The tomato sauce gives body and richness, and the grape tomatoes add a burst of acidity that keeps everything bright. A short list of pantry spices — cumin, smoked paprika, and a pinch of salt — builds warmth without crowding the flavor. Each bite will feel balanced!

What Harissa Is (and Why You Should Cook With It)

Harissa is a North African chili paste made from dried red peppers, garlic, olive oil, and spices like caraway and coriander. It’s often used in Tunisian and Moroccan cooking to bring warmth and depth to stews, grains, and marinades. Think of it as the middle ground between smoky chili paste and a spice blend — bold, but not one-note. Keep in mind that there are many varieties of harissa out there. Some lean spicy and bright; others are more mellow and earthy. Most grocery stores carry a jarred version that’s easy to find near international sauces or Mediterranean condiments– I actually LOVE the one by Trader Joes if you happen to have one nearby! A little of this will go a long way, which is why the jars are typically not too large in size. I would start with a spoonful, then taste before adding more — the flavor and spice’s goal is to support the soup, not dominate it.

If you are wondering also if this is a one off use kinda product, have no fear. Once you have harissa in your pantry, you’ll find ways to use it everywhere. Stir it into roasted vegetables, mix it into yogurt for a quick sauce, brush it on tofu or chickpeas before baking, or my favorite use: make Shakshuka. It’s one of those ingredients that instantly adds character without needing much else and you will be glad to have it around.

and now back to the soup Chat…

When the soup’s done simmering, taste and adjust the seasoning. A squeeze of lemon at the end lifts the flavor and balances the richness of the tomato base. That small bit of acidity matters — it keeps the soup bright instead of flat.

Ladle it into a bowl, drizzle with a touch of olive oil, and top with herbs if you have them. It’s the kind of meal that fills you up without weighing you down, which is the best kind of meal (again, as opposed to a classic tomato soup – was that not clear at this point?) Simple ingredients yet layered flavor and a warmth that lasts past the last bite — that’s what makes this one worth repeating.

Lentil Tomato Harissa Soup

Miranda | The Herby Eater
This Lentil Tomato Harissa Soup is a rich, satisfying bowl that balances warmth and brightness in every spoonful. Lentils simmer with tomato sauce and fresh grape tomatoes to create a naturally creamy texture without cream, while harissa adds gentle heat and depth. Smoked paprika and cumin round out the flavor, and a final squeeze of lemon keeps it fresh and lively. It’s simple, nutrient-dense, and deeply comforting — perfect for busy weeknights or cozy weekends, especially when paired with a crisp sourdough grilled cheese (as a recommendation).

  • OPTIONAL: Use an immersion blender to lightly purée for a creamy consistency while keeping some texture, or leave it fully chunky if you prefer.
  • Stir in lemon juice, then taste and adjust salt and pepper as needed.
  • Ladle into bowls and finish with a drizzle of olive oil or swirl of coconut yogurt. Garnish with fresh herbs if preferred before serving.

Notes

If you want more body without adding carrot, a spoonful of roasted red pepper purée or sun-dried tomato can round out the acidity.
Harissa varies by brand; taste halfway through cooking and adjust the spice with an extra teaspoon if desired.
Soup thickens as it sits — add a splash of broth or water when reheating.
