Smoky Maple Tofu Faux Deli Meat

If you’ve been anywhere near TikTok lately, you’ve probably seen the tofu sandwich deli meat trend making waves. I am ALL IN on this trend – especially since it’s budget-friendly, endlessly customizable, and still satisfying.

I tested it with the Trader Joes tofu sheets (which I believe was just a seasonal product, but this is my attempt at sharing with the universe to make it a staple!) but have no fear – I hunted down a similar option and it’s called “tofu skins”. Sold online and quite a few places it looks like, and works just as well.

These thin, flexible tofu wrappers (sheets OR skins alike) soak up marinade like a dream and crisp up just enough in a hot pan to give you that perfect bite: a little smoky, a little sweet, and sandwich or wrap worthy in every way.

This version was my personal favorite, and I hope you agree. Serve it deli-style with mustard and pickles, tuck it into wraps, or layer it high on sourdough with avocado and sprouts. You do you! Recipe here:

Equipment

  • Small mixing bowl
  • Whisk or fork
  • Shallow dish or zip-top bag for marinating
  • Nonstick or cast iron skillet
  • Tongs or spatula

Ingredients

  • 1 package Trader Joe’s tofu sheets 5–6 large sheets
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce or tamari
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or toasted sesame oil for deeper flavor
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • Optional: 1 tsp liquid smoke
  • Optional: 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • Neutral oil for cooking

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, maple syrup, oil, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and any optional add-ins like liquid smoke or mustard.
  • Gently separate the tofu sheets. Slice into pieces roughly 3×4 inches, or whatever size fits your sandwich plans. You can fold or double up sheets if you want thicker layers.
  • Place tofu slices into a shallow dish or zip-top bag. Pour marinade over top, making sure each piece is well coated. Let sit for at least 30 minutes in the fridge (or up to 24 hours for maximum flavor).
  • Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a bit of neutral oil. Sear tofu slices in batches for 1–2 minutes per side, until browned and lightly crisp at the edges.
  • Stack 2–3 slices per sandwich with your favorite fixings—mustard, lettuce, tomato, pickles, avocado, sprouts… you get the idea.

Is it just me or are my “millennial pauses” starting to get out of hand? 😂 Realizing that @traderjoes (not sponsored… yet 😇😉??) dropped the best deli meat dupe of the century with these frozen aisle tofu sheets will be absolutely on my list of 2025 wins for the year. Frozen tofu always handles meaty-textures better and the way these are sliced so thin but chewy legit feels like you are biting into a piece of meat. The marinade route I went is more smoky maple barbecue style, but I plan on sharing more options for this recipe soon. The sky is the limit in my eyes! Each package has about 2 servings of deli meat, so make sure to buy multiples if this is something you wanna try! ☺️ #tofudelimeat #sandwichrecipe #tofumarinade #tofurecipes

Notes

I recommend marinading for 24 hours / 1 day for maximum flavor, but the least amount of time you can do is 30 minutes – it just might need to be warmed to really absorb as much of the flavor as possible in this case! 🙂
This also works great in wraps, grain bowls, or as a protein topping for salads. These keep well in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Reheat in a skillet or toaster oven for best texture.
For a spicy add-on, try adding chili flakes or a splash of sriracha to the marinade.
